Food Allergies

In food allergies, the immune system classifies certain food components as foreign and dangerous and sets a defensive process in motion.

The allergic reaction is caused by allergens which bind to certain white blood cells in the body. This complex of allergen and white blood cells releases special substances (histamine) that cause the typical symptoms of an allergy. These include watery eyes, runny nose, asthma, and red skin areas.

More than 70 % of all immune cells are located in the intestine, which is thus the largest immune organ of the body.

The immune cells in the intestinal wall distinguish between "good" and "evil", store this information and recall it when necessary. If the brush border of the small intestine is injured or inflamed, the focussing of the antibodies to food antigens is missing. Allergies to certain components of the daily fare may result.

The protective antiseptic film of secreted immunoglobulin A (sIgA) which lines the inner mucosa is damaged; bacteria, viruses and toxins that should be actually held back by this protective film can pass unhindered from the intestine into the body.

Finding out precisely what substances you are allergic to can require up to several months of pains-taking detective work. The reason: In addition to whole foods that can be associated with the symptom as triggers, often natural, but also artificial food ingredients are the cause of the allergic reaction.

It should also be clarified whether it is a "real" allergy, or "only" an intolerance reaction. For the latter cannot be treated by anti-allergic therapy.

Many people avoid certain foods because they believe they are allergic. But in fact only one to two per cent of the population are allergic to certain foods. In children, the percentage is slightly higher. However, in adolescence the allergy regresses in a portion of the affected children.

The most important measure, to begin with, is avoidance of the allergenic food. But that is not always easy. You can give your patients the following tips:
