At the thought of bacteria, most people think first of diseases, but the number of harmless and even beneficial bacteria is much higher.
Colonization of the intestine with endogenous bacteria begins at birth and is completed within a few weeks. Together, these bacteria form a community of many different species called the intestinal flora. Its composition is estimated to comprise about 500 species. Despite this diversity, some representatives of these species are of particular importance: the lactic acid bacteria.
The intestinal flora forms a natural defence against invading foreign substances. In addition, it pro-duces substances important for regulation of our digestion.
Depending on age, nutrition and health status, the composition of the intestinal flora of each individual is constantly changing in a natural way. With the intake of probiotic (lat. pro = "for" + gr. βίος = "life") bacteria you effectively contribute to building and maintaining a healthy bacterial flora!
In order to become fully active in the intestines, probiotics must survive passage through the stomach unscathed. Therefore, survivability is important. Special bacterial strains are known to survive even such conditions. In addition, a special treatment protects against gastric and bile acids (e.g. capsule form).
A healthy intestinal flora can colonize only an intact intestinal mucosa, because this is the basis of the body's immune system.
